Best Way To Feed A Cat

Let's discuss the best way to feed a cat. When you get a kitten or adopt a cat you might wonder if there is a right or wrong way to feed them? This depends on how healthy you want your cat to be and it can also depend on your schedule. Continue reading to figure out how you should feed your cat.

If you want to keep your cat very healthy then the first thing to do is choose the right food. There are tons of different brands and varieties of food. Read the ingredients and avoid foods with byproducts, fillers, and a lot of grain. Choose foods that contain meats and healthy ingredients that a well-balanced diet should have. Organic brands tend to be the healthiest. Once you find a good brand choose the appropriate variety. If you have a kitten, many brands make a specific food for young, growing kittens. If your cat is older then you may want to pick a food made for seniors.

Next, you have to decide the best way to feed your cat. You can give it one or two meals a day at specific times such or you can just have a bowl of food out at almost all times. If you are a very routine person who likes to be organized and who works predictable hours then scheduled/portioned feedings are the healthiest way to go.

If you don't follow a routine or you're not always home at normal times and you're afraid that your cat will go hungry then go with free feeding. Simply fill a bowl with dry cat food and a bowl of water and leave them out at all times. Your cat can eat however much it wants at whatever time it wants. You can give your cat wet food, but it shouldn't sit out for a long time or it will spoil.

Free feeding can also save you a lot of time if you have more than one cat. Free feeding means no fighting over food and you won't have to feed each cat separately. You can even have two separate bowls full of food or make sure you fill a single bowl more frequently than if you only had one cat eating it.
