Unfortunately, hamsters can get cancer. Tumors can actually be fairly common in pet hamsters. Cancer and tumors are most common in older female hamsters. Like tumors in humans and other animals, they can be either benign or malignant.

Most hamsters have benign tumors which aren't fatal and don't spread to different organs. In fact only few hamsters suffer from malignant ones, although it does occasionally happen. Tumors in the adrenal glands and thyroid are the most common type of malignant tumors in hamsters. Symptoms of cancer in hamsters includes hair loss, abnormal behavior and cancer can cause hormone imbalances. Most owners of hamster that have cancer or tumors, notice the tumors. Benign tumors may be noticed as a lump, but may not actually cause any strange behavior in your pet hamster.

If you notice tumors on your hamster or abnormal behavior, consult a veterinarian. A veterinarian can do x-rays, exams, and run tests to determine what's wrong. Depending on what type of tumors your pet has your veterinarian will suggest various treatment options.

Besides benign and malignant, tumors can also be either internal or external. External tumors are ones that can usually be seen. Veterinarians often operate on hamsters with external tumors and surgically remove them. Internal tumors are often in internal organs and can be inaccessible. If a hamster has internal malignant tumors, a veterinarian may recommend the pet be euthanized. You can also just let your hamster live it's life until the cancer ends your furry little friend's life.
