Many people have turned to pets for companionship in their later years or have grown up with the family dog and never pay much attention unless the dog gets sick or injured.

As a dog ages his diet needs to change or you are going to end up with more Spot than you wanted on your hands. Maybe it is time to put your dog on a treadmill. Do not laugh. There are places in more affluent areas that cater to exercising pets to help them lose weight.

If you do not regularly exercise your pet as they age you will find that they can put on weight just the way you do. And just like humans it is just as difficult to keep the weight off once your dog loses their excess pounds unless they have a regular exercise regimen.

If you have a treadmill at home you can put your dog on a treadmill and make sure that you keep the speed at a very low level until your pet gets used to running on it. You can then make changes to the terrain and speed to make it a more interesting time for your pet.

There are a number of reasons to put your dog on a treadmill. Creating a healthy lifestyle and getting your dog used to exercise will result in a much longer life and enjoyment as your pet will be more lively and playful for a longer period of time.

Being able to exercise no matter what the weather holds is another advantage to being able to have your dog on a treadmill.

As with humans, it is important to take your dog to the vet before starting any kind of exercise other than just walking your dog. Your vet can give you recommendations on what exercise is best for your breed of dog.

Larger dogs take to treadmills better than miniature breeds or toy breeds. There are even treadmills designed specifically for pet exercise.

Many people have an unused treadmill that they bought in hopes of increasing their fitness level or losing weight. Instead it has become a very expensive clothes rack.

Being able to make some use of the treadmill to help your dog lose weight and stay fit is an excellent alternative to taking the machine to Goodwill to make room in your basement. Do not use a treadmill if your dog does not like to run at all.
