Do you know what the most common cause of illness and death in fish is? It's nutritional disorders. Unfortunately, many people think fish are a very easy pet to have. People forget that fish can develop a lot of different problems if their water isn't always clean and it they aren't fed the proper diet.
Some can actually be herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores. Knowing what your fish are and buying the right food is important. Commercial fish foods don't always fill the needs of every type of fish in an aquarium. Some foods also don't have enough vitamins in them and fish can develop vitamin deficiencies.
A vitamin B deficiency can cause serious issues for a fish including nerve and brain disorders. A vitamin C deficiency can lead to broken back disease which causes a fish's spine to curve, sometimes making it difficult for them to swim. it can be hard to diagnose a vitamin deficiency, so make sure your fish have a balanced diet, rich with vitamins.
If fish food isn't properly stores it can also lead to your fish having nutritional disorders. Dry fish food should be discarded after two months and good should always be kept in a cool, dry place.
Be careful if you give your fish live food. It can sometimes be infected and cause health issues in the fish that ate it. Try to avoid live food or make sure you buy it from a reputable place.
If you suspect that your fish have a nutritional disorder you will want to improve their diet immediately and you may have to give them vitamins. Treating nutritional disorders and many other illnesses in fish is difficult. If you have questions or need help diagnosing the problem, contact a vet or ask fish experts at your local pet store.
