Is There Pain Management For Dogs?

Is there pain management for dogs? If your dog is injured, just had surgery, or is experiencing pain related to a health issue you can probably see that they are in pain. If you've ever had surgery or even just had a headache then you know that pain is awful. Pain can ruin a day, it can prevent a person or dog from enjoying their favorite activities, and it can be depressing. Dogs can't do much to alleviate their pain which is where you come in. There are ways for dog owners to help their beloved pooch to live a happier pain-free life.

When a person has a headache they can take 2 pills and feel better in 20 minutes. If you have a toothache you call your dentist. What does a dog do when they are pain? Most likely they will just lay down and suffer through the pain. Nobody should have to do that. Always consult your veterinarian if you do not know why your dog is in pain. You should also consult your veterinarian about diet changes, medications, etc. Your veterinarian can tell you various pain management options to consider for your dog.

If your dog had a surgery or appears to be in severe pain you can help them by asking the vet for pain reducing medications. Minor surgeries won't require any pain medication, but major ones will. Various pain management that vets will mention include steroids, opioids, nutraceuticals, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and holistic alternatives. Which one you should try will depend on the underlying cause of your dogs pain. If your dog has arthritis they might be put on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines and also be recommended to do light exercise daily or therapy such as swimming.

You can do research, talk to friends, and talk to your veterinarian about all the options and find the best one for your dog.
