Ready to Make a Dog Treadmill?

Can you make a dog treadmill? Do you have what it takes to get your puppy or old dog healthy? Dog treadmills are great exercise. Let's get started...

So you think you can make a dog treadmill that will work as well or better than anything that you have seen on the market?

There are a number of models available from many different makers of dog treadmills in both self powered models and motorized models.

There is a maker of dog treadmills in the United Kingdom that has a professional version that includes a 3 horse power motor that allows you to adjust the speed from a quarter mile an hour to over twelve and a half miles an hour.

Note: Their models also include the ability to adjust the incline from flat to a ten percent incline with the ability to change the incline in small one tenth percent intervals.

If you are looking for a simple dog treadmill to help your dog get its proper exercise or help it to lose weight and you are not concerned with whether your pet can run up a steep incline then you can probably make a dog treadmill that will do the job. Here are some of the steps needed to make a dog treadmill... And be successful.

The first thing you need to do is to determine what you want to make your frame out of. All of the dog treadmill makers I have researched use metal frames except for Grand Carpet Mills who uses furniture grade wood to make their self powered models.

Your frame should be made out of hard wood, not pine, so as to not swell with humidity.

You should brace your frame carefully especially if you have a large breed dog.

You can also add notches for incline levels similar to an Adirondack Chair. Inside your frame you will place the rollers (axles and bearings).

You can also purchase a used gravity roller conveyer system if it is not too large.

Just remember that the shipping on something like that will likely be more than the cost of the rollers.

Keep in mind that your running or walking platform length needs to be at least twelve inches longer than the maximum stride that your breed has. To find that out you can check out specifications at the AKC website or any of the breed specific sites on the internet.

Another step in how to make a dog treadmill is the proper walking or running surface. Grand Carpet Mills sells replacement belts in various lengths and widths for different size treadmills.
