Nail Disorders in Cats

Let's discuss nail disorders in cats. There are various type of nail or claw disorders that occur in cats. This article will discuss the symptoms, causes, and treatments for nail disorders in cats.

Symptoms of nail disorders in cats include redness and swelling around the nails, abnormal nail color, and difficulty walking. Your cat may also lick it's paws more than normal and appear to be in pain. Other signs of nail disorders include nails that peel, separate, and are brittle.

Causes of nail disorders in cats include infection, cancer, trauma, hormonal disorders and immune system diseases. Some nail disorders can be present at birth and some such as infection form after a cat's nails are cut too short.

Since there are so many different things that can cause nail disorders, you should take your cat to a veterinarian if you notice signs of nail disorders. Your veterinarian will examine your cat's nails to see if only one nail appears to be affected or if multiple nails are. Most likely, your veterinarian will do a skin scraping to determine the cause of your cat's nail issues.

Once the cause of the nail disorder is figured out, your veterinarian will be able to properly treat it. Topical treatments or ointments may be put on nails, but depending on the cause your cat may require antimicrobial soaks or possibly surgery. Ointments tend to be the most common treatment option for nail disorders in cats since most nail disorders can't really cause more serious health issues.

To prevent your cat from developing nail disorders, be careful when trimming its nails. Never cut a cat's nails too short. If you aren't sure how to properly cut a cat's nail do research or ask your veterinarian to show you when you take your cat for their next check up.
