When it comes to small dog breeds many people love terriers. The Skye Terrier is a great dog, but does not get along with cats. Jack Russell Terriers are cute and full of enjoy, a great breed for a an active family with kids. You can also go with a breed that is similar to another breed just smaller. For example the miniature Poodle, Miniature Schnauzer, Miniature Pinscher. If you love standard Poodles or Schnauzers but don't have room for a dog that size then you can get a miniature one. Miniature Pinscher can make great dogs that are loyal, alert, active, and intelligent however, they can be aggressive without the proper training as a puppy.
Other popular breeds of small dogs include the Dachshund, Bichon Frise, Shih Tzu, Chihuahua, Pug, Pekingese, Pomeranian, and Papillion. Dachshunds are good watchdogs despite their size and the Pekingese can be an aggressive dog also even though it is quite small. Dachshunds can get along with children while the Pekingese is not recommended for families with children.
The Shih Tzu is a very friendly breed that doesn't require daily grooming, so it's great for families with children or other pets. The Pomeranian is so fluffy, adorable, and gentle that is tends to be a very popular breed. The Papillion is a great small breed dog because it is actually considered to be one of the most intelligent breeds of dogs.
