Need a Treadmill for a Dog? If You Want a Pet Treadmill Introduction Start Here!

Buying a treadmill for a dog? Now's a good time to find a new dog treadmill or a used dog treadmill. But first, learn the basics of pet treadmills. Let's get started...

Do you dread that walk with your dog in the rain? Do you hate shoveling snow let alone walking your dog in the bad weather no matter what it is doing outside? Do you have joint issues your self that prevent you from exercising at the level you want to? If you can answer yes to any of these questions you may want to find a treadmill for a dog. Using a treadmill that you may already own can be an option although the treadmill motors in human treadmills are usually to strong and rather noisy for our canine friends.

Also you need to understand that in order for a treadmill to be an effective tool to help your dog to either lose weight or maintain their weight and fitness levels you need to have a running surface that is twelve inches longer than the dog breed’s average stride length and it needs to be wide enough to accommodate the girth of the dog as well. Toy and miniature breeds would not do well on a full size human treadmill as the speeds are not as easily adjusted (except on the more expensive models) and the entire platform would be too big and very overwhelming for a smaller dog.

There area several companies that make treadmills for a dog in both the motorized and dog powered versions with completely different types of running surfaces. Dogtrotter.net uses ABEC 7 roller bearings, composite non slip running slats, 1 ¼” axles and Plexiglas sides and are delivered completely assembled. Prices range from $1299 for the smallest model with a fifty four inch by twelve inch running surface to $2499 for the largest model with a sixty six inch by 15 inch running surface.

Grand Carpet Mills makes a furniture quality treadmill for a dog that start at $350 for their small breed treadmill (dogs up to 45 pounds) and top out at only $395 for their large breed version (dogs over 85 pounds). Grand Carpet Mills uses two and a half inch rollers beneath their running surface which measures fifty inches by fifteen inches (carpet fabric – easily replaced with a factory replacement belt for less than 490). The Big Dog model is designed for German Shepherds, Mastiffs, Great Danes and Great Pyrenees and has a belt length of about sixty inches. These models require some assembly but are shipped via UPS without the dimensional weight charge.
