Amebiasis is a disease that affects reptiles. It is one of the most common diseases in reptiles and people can be affected by it too. This article will discuss Amebiasis so reptile owners know the symptoms and what to do if their reptile has it.

Symptoms that a reptile with Amebiasis may have are loss of appetite, weight loss, vomiting, and diarrhea. Certain foods or illnesses could cause a reptile to have diarrhea, however it is due to Amebiasis it will be mucus-like or may contain blood. Diarrhea is also a symptom of Amebiasis in humans.

Amebiasis is an infection from a microscopic parasite. The parasites attach to the intestines and sometimes the liver and other tissues. In humans it may last 2 weeks, in reptiles it can be fatal.

If your reptile has the symptoms of Amebiasis, you will probably have to take them to the vet to be sure. Pets can develop a lot of different illnesses and infections and it's important to properly treat them. Vets can test for Amebiasis and prescribe a medication that kills the parasites.

How you get your reptile to the vet is important. You want to help your reptile without infecting yourself with the disease. Keep your pet contained so it can't spread the disease. It's a good idea to use gloves when handling the pet. If you have a few reptiles, keep healthy ones away from the one that may be infected with Amebiasis.

To prevent your pets from getting the disease be sure to always keep them clean can keep them fed a well-balanced diet. Some reptiles such as turtles are often carriers of Amebiasis, but will not be infected by it and show any of the symptoms. Carnivorous reptiles, such as many types of snakes are more susceptible to Amebiasis. Therefore, different reptiles should not be kept together.
